Great post, Michelle. It is true that social media should be more about relationship development to make it a meaningful communication tool with customers and prospective customers.

Too many times companies use Twitter or Facebook like another radio spot or TV ad when it can go much deeper than that.

I completely agree with your post, Eric. There is no focus. An eccommerce website has one goal: to sell items. A healthcare website is schizophrenic with too many "goals" vying for attention.

Healthcare websites have information about the hospital, online bill pay, recruitment initiatives, event information, etc, and all of it has to be at the top of the information pyramid.

What is a healthcare website?
An online encyclopedia?
A events calendar?
A recruitment website?
A site for marketing initiatives?

Far too many topics for any website to accomplish...

Sure Amazon.com has information for hiring new employees but job information is not fighting for face time with the shopping experience.

We need to focus on the goals that are most important in order to give our users the experience they demand. I believe patient portals are a step in the right direction. They're all about our patients. The true reason we have a website in the first place.

As far as complexity goes, it'd be hard to say that other industries don't have them too. Financial services has sarbanes oxley and numerous other regulatory issues, and yet they still are able to get it done. The travel industry works with airlines and I can't imagine that building the technology for Travelocity, what with constantly moving airline schedules, rental cars and hotels is that far removed from the challenges of healthcare Internet strategy. It's probably true that healthcare tends to underfund these kinds of initiatives compared to other industries (especially if marketing is heading them up!). Some of it, too, is to get rid of the simple stuff that takes up a lot of time, so we can focus on higher level strategic issues. Most healthcare organizations are focused on the trees and don't even know the forest is there. And it's on fire!

The key to the "next level" I'm thinking of here is that the sites have to be fundamentally changing healthcare delivery, and those are few and far between. For examples, I'll put it this way: even some of the most advanced sites out there - even those Geonetric has built, or our best competitors have built, or the best hospitals in the US have put together on their own - are a far cry from realizing this goal. Every ounce of energy at Geonetric is directed at changing that.

Eric, I couldn't agree with you more, but I wonder how we can take our sites to the next level when we are dealing with complexities such as HIPAA, insurance reimbursement and more. What suggestions do you have for taking a hospital web site to the next level and which hospitals have sites that you would consider best in class?

I will shy away from self promotion here, but, there is a far better and less chaotic/risky solution, particularly, when it comes to health care.

You need "AI conversational agents" that actually engage and drill-down messging via User's tweets or SMS messages and provide consistent and guaranteed replies.

We're moving into that space and tests are looking remarkable, particularly with User satisfaction and engagement.

You can "add the human touch" via behind the scenes contributions from health care professionals, but vet the information before it is live.
